Research studies have used various effective techniques that have helped children grasp phonemic awareness. These are described in Chapter 8 of Equipped for Reading Success. One such technique involves using tokens to represent phonemes and/or syllables.
For decades, tokens have been used successfully to teach phonemic awareness in research studies and by teachers.
Tokens provide a visual/spacial reference point to help students make concepts of syllable and phonemes concrete.
